Position Summary:
The Accounting Manager is responsible for performing advanced accounting functions to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with University policies and applicable regulations. This role involves preparing and analyzing financial statements, reconciling accounts, and supporting the month-end and year-end close processes. The ideal candidate will have strong technical accounting skills, attention to detail, and experience working with ERP systems in a higher education environment.
Essential Functions:
Prepare and post journal entries to the general ledger and maintain general ledger accounts, including running general ledger batches.
Oversee daily processing and accounting for revenue and expenditures by departments.
Reconcile bank accounts and ensure accuracy of cash transactions.
Perform monthly, quarterly, and annual account reconciliations.
Assist with the preparation of financial statements and management reports.
Maintains accounting software for fixed assets and ensures proper capitalization and depreciation tracking.
Maintains a list of bank-issued credit cards and manages authorized credit limits.
Reconciliation of donor data through Donor Perfect, ensuring thank-you letters, and preparation of year-end tax correspondence.
Supports the CFO with special projects, strategic planning, and board reporting.
Coordinates financial calendar responsibilities, such as insurance renewals, reporting deadlines, and board preparation.
Manages the accounting for the 403(b)-retirement plan, including regulatory reporting and tax returns.
Assists with commercial insurance renewals. Communicates updates of the approved driver’s list.
Distributes Business Office mail.
Support the annual audit process by providing schedules and documentation.
Design, document and monitor internal controls to ensure adherence to GAAP, IRS regulations, and specific grant requirements.
Supports other employees of the Business Office and serves as backup support to accounts payable.
Utilize ERP systems for financial data management and reporting.
Other responsibilities:
Perform ad hoc analysis and special projects as assigned.
Participate in campus activities as available.
May be required to work evening and weekend hours, on occasion.
Education, experience, & skills required:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field required.
Minimum of 3 years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in higher education or a similar environment.
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft 365 applications, including SharePoint, OneDrive, Office Suite, Outlook, and Teams.
Technical Skills:
Proficiency in reconciling general ledgers and bank reconciliations.
Experience with ERP systems (e.g., Colleague, Banner, PeopleSoft or similar).
Strong analytical, critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
Ability to manage and prioritize tasks and meet deadlines independently or as a team.
Good communication (written and oral), organizational, and attention to detail skills.
Ability to act with discretion and maintain confidentiality.
Student-oriented and customer service-focused, with a demonstrated commitment to quality customer service strategies and diversity.
Preferred Qualifications:
CPA certification or progress toward CPA is a plus.
Knowledge of fund accounting and higher education financial practices.
