On November 9th, 2022, the University of the Southwest was joined on campus by representatives from Energy Transfer to accept a donation in the amount of seventy-thousand dollars ($70,000). Energy Transfer is a Texas-based company that began in 1996 as a small intrastate natural gas pipeline operator and is now one of the largest and most diversified midstream energy companies in North America. With a significant presence in the Permian Basin, Energy Transfer values the importance of investing in the communities in which its employees live and work. The direct contribution will support the USW athletics department’s over-the-road transportation needs. Mark Milliken, Energy Transfer’s Vice President for EHS and Organizational Excellence, was present to meet with administration and students and noted that “Energy Transfer recognizes that as a community, we are better together.” Mark Milliken also made a direct contribution of $5000 on behalf of the Tyler Milliken Foundation.

Dr. Tipton, interim President at USW, states, “the generosity and thoughtfulness of the leadership team at Energy Transfer are immeasurable. The management group specifically requested time on campus to meet with students and members of the USW Golf Team. They toured the campus, followed by lunch with our students to get to know them and encourage them directly. Their engagement with USW students highlights their focus on positive social and personal impact. This donation will be so helpful for so many of our student-athletes. Words cannot possibly express our gratitude for the team at Energy Transfer and their decision to support USW.”

Associate Vice President and Athletic Director Steve Appel, who has been working directly with Mr. Milliken to finalize the details of the gift, commented, “we have worked with Energy Transfer to align the contribution with the organization’s emphasis on community, safety, and social responsibility. Throughout the entire process, their commitment to making the greatest positive impact was evident. We are so incredibly grateful to be able to work with them.”
