On July 15th, 2022, upon nomination by his peers at the University of the Southwest, Tyler James was posthumously granted the honorific title of “Head Golf Coach Emeritus*.” Emeriti status is traditionally awarded to faculty or staff members who are retiring from their profession and service to the university and hold the highest professional rank in their field. The President may consider nominations for extraordinary faculty or staff who’ve demonstrated exceptional service to the university.

Dr. Tipton, interim President of USW, states, “undoubtedly, Coach James’ contribution to this institution will always be remembered. He was an integral part of the USW family and always worked to build camaraderie among his players and his peers. The campus was blessed to have him, and it’s an honor to accept and grant this nomination.”

With the approval of this nomination, Tyler James will now be listed as part of the official university record as “Head Golf Coach Emeritus*.” Emeriti faculty and staff are included on the official honorific roster in the university catalog and the annual commencement program. It is customary to update the institutional record each year to include a notation (*) for any Emeriti Faculty/Staff who are deceased.

Associate Vice President of Facilities and Athletics, Steve Appel, commented, “we all know that Tyler will continue to be a part of our lives. I would like him to always be a part of our university record here at USW. The amount of work Tyler put in for his kids and profession speaks volumes. Moving forward, Tyler will always have an impact on our golf programs, our department, and our lives.”
