March 01, 2018

After a record-setting 2017 fall sports season, University of the Southwest Athletics currently sits in third place among the conference's 13 member institutions in the 2017-18 Red River Athletic Conference All-Sports Award race. This RRAC All-Sports Award is given to the athletic department that performs the best athletically across all RRAC sponsored sports throughout the academic year and will be awarded to the top RRAC Athletic Program for overall athletic performance in May.
"At the University of the Southwest, our athletic program is committed to establishing itself as being among the premier athletic programs within the Red River Athletic Conference and the NAIA in both the athletic and academic arenas," stated Vice President for Institutional Development and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics, William Weidner. "These recent outstanding athletic achievements by our student-athletes on the field of play are further evidence of that commitment. It's a Great Time to be a Mustang!"
The Mustang Athletic Program had its best RRAC fall season ever by earning 36 points to claim a history making third-place finish in the fall RRAC All-Sports Championship race, only three points out of the runner-up position. For the first time in its RRAC membership history, USW placed all five of its fall sports teams in RRAC Postseason Tournament Championship action.
USW volleyball finished third in the final regular-season standings with a 9-5 RRAC mark and were semifinalists at the 2017 RRAC volleyball tournament. For the first time in its RRAC history, Lady Mustang volleyball qualified for the RRAC women's volleyball tournament in consecutive years.  The men's soccer program set a USW regular-season record for RRAC wins while finishing third in the final regular-season standings with a 6-3-2 RRAC record and qualified for the 2017 RRAC men's soccer tournament. USW women's soccer finished in a three-way tie for fourth place with a 7-3 RRAC record and qualified for the 2017 RRAC women's soccer tournament while amassing an incredible 70 to seven goal differential which ranked among the best in the nation. Also contributing with solid performances were the USW women's cross country team and the USW men's cross country team with impressive second and third place finishes respectively at the 2017 RRAC Cross Country Championships. In addition, three USW cross country student-athletes represented USW on the national stage by qualifying for the 2017 NAIA National Cross Country Championships.
This history making 2017 fall season athletic performance by the USW athletic program comes on the heels of its best ever final RRAC All-Sports Championship finish during the 2016-17 academic year in which the Mustangs claimed a fourth-place finish position among the 13 RRAC member institutions.
Points for the RRAC All-Sports Championship are awarded to the top five teams in regular season conference standings using a 10-8-6-4-2 scoring system, while results in conference tournaments and championship events merit additional points on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis. In sports such as cross country, golf, and track & field, postseason team finishes are awarded regular season and postseason points.
