March 08, 2017 — HOBBS, N.M. – Coming off a 24-victory season that saw the USW Lady Mustangs Volleyball team reach the Red River Athletic Conference Championship Game, USW athletics was searching for a proven and experienced leader as their next Head Coach to build upon the program’s recent successes. Towards that end, the University of the Southwest Department of Intercollegiate Athletics recently announced the hiring of Angela Franke as its Head Women’s Volleyball Coach, introducing her as the newest member of the Mustang Athletic Staff.
“Angela Franke possesses all of the qualities that one would look for in a successful Head Coach,” stated Vice President for Institutional Development and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics William Weidner. “Angela’s well-rounded coaching background, excellent recruiting organization and proven experience as a Head Coach on the intercollegiate level will serve her well in her role as our Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at USW. Her commitment to student-athlete success in the classroom and on the field of play will be a great fit with our athletic department core values as well as our University Mission Statement in this regard.”
Franke, who coached the previous three seasons as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Loyola University at New Orleans, is excited to lead the USW Women’s Volleyball program.
“I am very excited to join the Mustang family,” Franke said. “I would like to thank Mr. Weidner, the USW administration and the search committee for this great opportunity. I’m looking forward working with the team and build on what they’ve already accomplished. Our goal is to take USW volleyball to the next level.”
Franke coached Loyola University at New Orleans, an NAIA institution, to a pair of Southern States Athletic Conference volleyball tournament appearances. The 2016 season featured a four-match winning streak where the Wolf Pack lost only one set. Loyola also defeated Dalton State College in the SSAC tournament. During her tenure as Head Women’s Volleyball Coach, Franke also served as the Athletic Compliance Coordinator for the Loyola University at New Orleans athletic department.
Prior to Loyola, Franke served as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at NCAA Division I Mississippi Valley State University. Highlights of Franke's tenure in Itta Bena included a third-place SWAC Eastern Division finish and a first round SWAC tournament upset of top-seeded Prairie View A&M in 2012. MVSU also defeated defending SWAC champion and perennial conference power Jackson State University in five thrilling sets in the conference tournament.

In February 2011, Franke was hired as the Head Women's Volleyball Coach at St. Andrews University in North Carolina at the NCAA Division II level. Franke spent one season with the Knights before accepting the head coaching post at MVSU, but made a lasting impact on the women’s volleyball team, restarting a program that did not compete the previous year and laying a solid foundation for future successes during her tenure.
Prior to accepting the head coaching position at St. Andrew’s University, Franke accepted her first head coaching position as Head Women's Volleyball Coach at McCook Community College, Nebraska in 2009. During her stay as head coach, Franke successfully fulfilled her coaching responsibilities in leading the program forward in addition to serving as the Director of Housing.
Prior to her time at McCook Community College, Franke entered the intercollegiate coaching profession as the Women’s Volleyball Graduate Assistant Coach at NCAA Division I Alcorn State University from 2007-2008.
As a student-athlete, Franke played women’s volleyball on scholarship for two seasons at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Ariz., and completed her career as a student-athlete at the NCAA Division I level with Jackson State University. Franke received a Master of Science in Guidance Education from Alcorn State University in 2008 and a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from Alcorn in 2007.
“Angela, along with her daughter Alyx and son Alijah, will be wonderful additions to our athletic department, the University and the Hobbs community,” added Weidner. “On behalf of our USW Athletic Department and the University of the Southwest, we welcome Angela Franke as the newest member of our Mustang Family.”
