Newspapers from JFK assassination donated to USW

(Hobbs, NM – Nov 7)  Marking the 50th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in Dallas, TX, a former Lovington resident has donated newspapers about the event to University of the Southwest.

Jerry B. Cain, a Chancellor at Judson University in Elgin, Illinois, was a senior at Lovington High School in 1963, when the historical event occurred.  “I was standing in the cafeteria line for lunch when Dr. Pannell turned on the PA system and let the radio play out the assassination of JFK in Dallas. I remember it well,” stated Cain.

The 1963 newspapers being donated by Cain include, The Lovington Daily Leader Nov 24 and Nov 26 editions; The Hobbs Daily News-Sun Nov 22 and Nov 24 editions; the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal Nov 23, 24, 25 and 26 editions; and the New York Herald Tribune of Nov 23.

The newspapers are currently available to view in a display in the Scarborough Memorial Library.  The newspapers will be maintained by library staff.  For questions, please contact John McCance, Dean of Library Services, at 575-492-2141.
