February 4, 2010 - Take note on the schedule due to the cancelled games versus Jarvis, Wayland Baptist University has been added on Monday March 1, 2010 for a double header here in Hobbs, NM, with the opening pitch set for 12:00 pm (MST).
February 5, 2010 - Opening day for the USW baseball team was a continuation of last year where the Mustangs were in the top 30 in the nation in several offensive categories. With all but one starter returning from last years team the expectations are set high for this years squad. Game 1 versus Sul Ross State University saw an offensive explosion by the Mustangs which lead to an opening day win 12-3 over the Lobos. Winning pitcher was Matt Peoples (1-0) who started off slow, however found his rythym and turned it over to Ernesto Torres who came in and shut the Lobos out for the final two innings. The offense was lead by Vincent Bejar, Martin Adams, and Danny Navarro who all homered during the onslaught which saw the Mustangs start 2010 with a 17 hit performance. Season Record 1-0.
February 6, 2010 - USW vs SRSU Game 2 - 3
-Game 2 starter was sophomore right hander from Heber, AZ, Andrew Henning (1-0). Andy used his two-seam fastball and change-up to limit the Lobos to three hits in a seven inning complete game. The right hander only allowed an unearned run with two walks and one strikeout. "Andy proved today that he can be a consistent starting pitcher for us and this is only the beginning to a promising season for him," stated Head Coach Mike Galvan. The offense was lead by Oscar Roman who went 2-3 with a run scored and an rbi along with senior right fielder Danny Navarro and senior designated hitter Vincent Bejar who both went 1-2 with a run scored and an rbi. Season Record 2-0.
-Game 3 of the series turned out to be disappointing for the Mustangs as they lead 7-5 entering the 8th inning and a passed ball allowed the Lobos to tie the game in the inning and then saw the Lobos score the winning run in the 9th on a single to left off of relief pitcher Alfonso Alonzo. Starting pitcher Garrett Bertola, junior from Hobbs, NM, struggled early on with his control but found it in time to keep the Mustangs within striking distance as he allowed seven hits, five runs which only two were earned, while walking four and also striking out four. "Garrett was really eager and I think anxious for the first start of the year and it showed as he was high with his fastball and couldn't find the change-up. This was a great lesson for our pitchers who saw a pitcher not have his best stuff but was able to still allow the team an opportunity to come back and win the game," stated Coach Mike Galvan. Freshman Rene Hernandez, El Paso, TX, pitched a hitless 7th inning for hit first collegiate inning. Freshman Alfonzo Alonzo (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Mustangs. Junior Martin Adams was 3-6 with an rbi, senior Oscar Roman was 3-4 with an rbi, and senior Danny Navarro was 4-5 with a run scored and an rbi. The Mustangs exploded for 17 hits however the story of the day was the 14 runners left on base. Season Record 2-1
