Games vs LCU

Game 1 saw left-handed pitcher Matt Peoples allow 10 hits, 5 runs, 5 earned, 1 walk and 3 strikeouts.  "Matt did a great job of bouncing back from his last outing in which he faced Division I New Mexico State and he didn't have his best stuff, but today he was a bulldog on the mound against Number 1 ranked Lubbock Christian University.  We threw our best and I think we withstood their best as we had the tying run at the plate in the last inning with one out, however we just couldn't cash in", stated Head Coach Mike Galvan.  The Mustangs fell 5-2 and were lead by Danny Navarro's 1-3 followed by Jose Jaramillo and Oscar Roman who were also 1-3 on the day.

Game 2 had Sophomore right hander Reyes Melendes take the mound for the Mustangs and pitch four great innings and allowing the Chaps from LCU a single run in the second inning but the Chaps then exploded for four runs in the fourth to take a commanding 5-0 lead in which they would not relenquish.  The final score was 8-1 and the Mustangs pounded out 10 hits but left 8 men on base and grounded into 2 double plays with the bases loaded and no one out.  "When you load the bases and you have your production part of the line-up on deck you like your chances but we just couldn't get the big hit when we needed it", stated Mike Galvan.  Senior outfielder Danny Navarro lead the way with a 3-4 performance followed by Micah Martinez who was 2-3.  LCU pounded out 11 hits but had 8 runs to show for it as this drops the Mustangs record to 4-9 and continues a dreadful stretch of games against NCAA Division I, II, III and the number one team in the nation in the NAIA.  Next up for the Mustangs is Division II opponent Eastern New Mexico University on Tuesday, March 9 and then the Mustangs open up conference play on March 12-13 in Fort Worth, TX versus Texas Wesleyan University.

March 1, 2010:

Due to the inclement weather today's games, Monday March, 1st, 2010, versus Wayland Baptist University have been cancelled.

February 25, 2010; USW vs New Mexico State University

The Mustangs were welcomed to Division I NMSU baseball field with a 15-5 defeat at the hands of the Aggies.  Starting pitcher Matt Peoples only lasted three innings while surrendering seven hits, six earned runs, four walks and five strikeouts while throwing 98 pitches to the power hitting line-up of the New Mexico State Aggies. "Matt came out in the first inning and dominated and then for some reason lost the velocity he showed in the first and the next two innings really struggled to get the ball down in the zone and made two mistakes which were deposited over the fence.  Those two homeruns plated five runs for the Aggies and really changed the momentum of the game after we scored one run in the first to take a 1-0 lead", stated Head Coach Mike Galvan.  Jose Jaramillo came out and hit a two run homerun to put the Mustangs back into the game at 5-3, however the pitching could not hold down the opposing team as RHP Andy Henning gave up seven runs in two and one thirds innings of relief.  Vincent Bejar contributed with a 3-4 day along with fellow Lubbock, TX native Martin Adams who was 2-4.  Mustangs record falls to 4-6.

Game 2 of the doubleheader showed why the Mustangs have high expectations for this years team as they demonstrated how on any given day any team can defeat their opponent without regards to divisions.  The Mustangs held a 6-4 lead in the seventh after Hobbs, NM native Joshua Hargrove deposited a 1-1 fastball over the right centerfield wall for a three run homerun and gave the Mustangs life after falling behind 4-3, however the Aggies rallied in the 8th inning off of Garrett Bertola and scored four earned runs to win the game 10-6.    "Hargrove swung the bat really well today and hit a couple of hard balls including that homerun which was a no doubter, I couldn't be happier for the young man.  He will forever remember that hit", stated Mike Galvan.  Starting pitcher Ernesto Torres from El Paso, TX, only lasted one inning after walking five and allowing two earned runs.  The story of the game was Reyes Melendez, El Paso native, who pitched six innings while scattering five hits and allowing four runs but only two were earned.  "Reyes made some great pitches today and it was good to see the young man bounce back after a terrible performance last outing", stated Mike Galvan.  Offensively, Oscar Roman contributed with a 2-4 performance with 3 runs and one rbi and the Mustangs scored six runs on eight hits while committing two errors.  The Mustangs record falls to 4-7.  Next opponent is Wayland Baptist University on March 1, 2010.

February 5, 2010 - Opening day for the USW baseball team was a continuation of last year where the Mustangs were in the top 30 in the nation in several offensive categories.  With all but one starter returning from last years team the expectations are set high for this years squad.  Game 1 versus Sul Ross State University saw an offensive explosion by the Mustangs which lead to an opening day win 12-3 over the Lobos.  Winning pitcher was Matt Peoples (1-0) who started off slow, however found his rythym and turned it over to Ernesto Torres who came in and shut the Lobos out for the final two innings.  The offense was lead by Vincent Bejar, Martin Adams, and Danny Navarro who all homered during the onslaught which saw the Mustangs start 2010 with a 17 hit performance.  Season Record 1-0.

February 6, 2010 - USW vs SRSU Game 2 - 3

-Game 2 starter was sophomore right hander from Heber, AZ, Andrew Henning (1-0).  Andy used his two-seam fastball and change-up to limit the Lobos to three hits in a seven inning complete game.  The right hander only allowed an unearned run with two walks and one strikeout.  "Andy proved today that he can be a consistent starting pitcher for us and this is only the beginning to a promising season for him," stated Head Coach Mike Galvan.  The offense was lead by Oscar Roman who went 2-3 with a run scored and an rbi along with senior right fielder Danny Navarro and senior designated hitter Vincent Bejar who both went 1-2 with a run scored and an rbi.  Season Record 2-0.

-Game 3 of the series turned out to be disappointing for the Mustangs as they lead 7-5 entering the 8th inning and a passed ball allowed the Lobos to tie the game in the inning and then saw the Lobos score the winning run in the 9th on a single to left off of relief pitcher Alfonso Alonzo.  Starting pitcher Garrett Bertola, junior from Hobbs, NM, struggled early on with his control but found it in time to keep the Mustangs within striking distance as he allowed seven hits, five runs which only two were earned, while walking four and also striking out four.  "Garrett was really eager and I think anxious for the first start of the year and it showed as he was high with his fastball and couldn't find the change-up.  This was a great lesson for our pitchers who saw a pitcher not have his best stuff but was able to still allow the team an opportunity to come back and win the game," stated Coach Mike Galvan.  Freshman Rene Hernandez, El Paso, TX, pitched a hitless 7th inning for hit first collegiate inning.  Freshman Alfonzo Alonzo (0-1) absorbed the loss for the Mustangs.  Junior Martin Adams was 3-6 with an rbi, senior Oscar Roman was 3-4 with an rbi, and senior Danny Navarro was 4-5 with a run scored and an rbi.  The Mustangs exploded for 17 hits however the story of the day was the 14 runners left on base.  Season Record 2-1.

February 12-14 at Hardin Simmons University

-Game 1 of the tournament fitted USW vs NCAA DII opponent New Mexico Highlands University.  Senior right hander Andy Henning took to the mound for the Mustangs and had a difficult time getting the Cowboys out as the Mustangs gave up a season high 16 runs as they were defeated 16-1 in a 10 run-rule  shortened game.  "We were just over matched today by a team that could just flat hit the baseball and our inability to throw strikes early in the count really made it difficult to get their hitters out when the only pitch we can get over for a strike is a fastball right down the middle of the plate", stated Coach Galvan.  Overall record falls to 2-2.

Game 2 was a much more bright spot for the Mustangs as sophomore transfer Josh Cappello lead the way with a couple of timely hits along with fellow Rio Rancho teammate Micah Martinez followed suit with an rbi single that proved to be enough for starting pitcher Matt Peoples.  "Matt was at his best today as the hitters for Hardin Simmons (NCAA DIII) struggled to figure him out as he was able to make key pitches in crucial counts.  He has definately proven to be a number one", according to Head Coach Mike Galvan.  The Mustangs 3-2 victory was huge for a team who is trying to find their identity early on this season.  Being able to win a one run game provides confindence for this team and hopefully the Mustangs can build some momentum.  Overall record is 3-2.

Game 3 pitted USW against NCAA DIII McMurray University.  The Mustangs fell 10-2 and starting pitcher Garrett Bertola didn't have his best stuff however he entered the sixth inning down 3-2.  "Garrett pitched well enough to win today but our inability to have good situational hitting cost us the game.  We had way too many base running mistakes and our defense let us down with an error on a double play ball and overthrowing the first baseman on a bunt cost us four runs in the seventh inning.  We just couldn't overcome our own mistakes this game", stated Mike Galvan.  Overall record is 3-3

Howard Payne University

NCAA DIII opponent HPU took 2 out of 3 from the Mustangs win scores of 7-5, 8-4 and lost the final game 12-2.  The Mustangs salvaged game 3 with a 12-2 win with a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the fifth by sophomore Joshua Cappello.  Game one saw several opportunities slip past the Mustangs as scoring chances went by the wayside and this proved to be the achilles heel for game two as the Yellowjackets scored 8 runs in the fourth inning and that proved to be enough to hold off the Stangs comeback in the ninth as they left two runners on base.  This drops the Mustangs to 4-5 on the year.

February 22, 2010 - Games have been cancelled for tomorrow versus NMSU.  A doubleheader will be played on Wednesday starting at noon in Las Cruces.
